VACATION AT THE SEA OF GALILEE – KINNERET
In Israel, the Sea of Galilee is called Kinneret Lake. This is one of the most beautiful places in the northeastern part of Israel. The largest city on the banks of the Kinneret is Tiberias. It was founded in the 1st century AD. by the emperor of Tiberius and is named after him. Close to Tiberias, Christian temples and monasteries were erected at different times; now there are many Christian shrines here: the place of Jesus' baptism near the Jordan River, the temple of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. The most revered include the Mount of Beatitudes, where Christ delivered his Sermon on the Mount, as well as the town of Capernaum, the place where Christ met with the apostles.
In addition to such world-famous places as Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, tours to the Holy places of Israel include a visit to Capernaum. It was in Capernaum that Christ lived with his mother after his exile from Nazareth. In Capernaum, Jesus worked many of his miracles: he cured the mother-in-law of the Apostle Peter from a serious illness, resurrected his daughter Yaira, and healed the seekers.
However, when Jesus said in his sermon in the synagogue, “Repent and believe in the gospel,” he was expelled from here as well. Then Christ bitterly said: “You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hade...”
This prophecy came true, like all the rest of Jesus. In the 7th century the settlement of Capernaum practically disappeared. It was covered with sand and silt, and only a few remaining fragments of buildings on the surface reminded of people that lived here. The settlement of Ein Sheva, in Arabic Tahba, and in Greek chronicles known as Heptapegon, is little visited by main tourist excursions. However, important events for all Christians took place here. The name of the settlement in all languages means “Seven Springs”. This name is not accidental, as 70 springs of water come out of the ground here.
Ein Sheva is known for the most striking Jesus’ miracle — the multiplication of loaves and fish. The modern Church of the Multiplication of Loaves was built on the basis of an old Byzantine church of the 4th century.
It was erected in the place where Jesus performed one of his most famous miracles. A tour to biblical places in the north of Israel is an opportunity for every believer to share the Gospel and think about the meaning of existence.
